INTRODUCING THEÂ QUANTUM COMPUTING HARD- AND SOFTWARE SUMMER SCHOOL 2021
The promise of opening up a whole new field of information technology has led to a rapid development of laboratory level quantum research into an emerging technology sector with huge transformative potential. A new generation of physics and engineering students is aiming to become the workforce that will ultimately fulfill this promise. The first ever Quantum Computing Hard- and Software Summer School aims to create an opportunity for those students to extend their knowledge as well as to connect to leading players in industry and academia.
The summer school program is designed to answer questions which naturally arise when thinking about the field of quantum computing. The program is divided into four parts: quantum algorithms, quantum hardware, a hands-on programming session, and a series of invited talks on the current state of research. Each part is tailored to give an answer to one question.

The four questions are:
What makes quantum computers different from classical ones?
How do you build a quantum processor?
How do you implement quantum computation once you have the hardware?
What are people in the field working on?
The mornings will consist of two keynote lectures, one each focused on quantum software and quantum hardware, which aim to answer the first and second question, respectively. In the afternoons, we will first have a session where the students get a chance to put the newly learned concepts into practice during tutorials in Qiskit, where they can simulate a quantum computer and implement quantum algorithms. Finally, each day will close with talks given by leading professors and startups in order to convey the diverse research environment related to quantum technologies.

Eligibility
The silver lining of holding the summer school online is that we can expand our reach. Therefore, all qualified applicants will be able to watch all of the talks. However, there are some interactive parts of our program, mostly the hands-on and poster sessions, which are not practical to undertake with too many participants. Therefore, we still select qualified applicants who will have access to the full range of events offered. The summer school is aimed towards junior PhD students with a background in quantum information theory or experimentalists studying quantum technologies. Students are still encouraged to make a poster in order to present their current research, which will be presented virtually.
Fees
The summer school is now free for all participants.
Deadlines
We will be accepting applications until midnight on Friday, April 30th.
COVID-19 SAFETYÂ PLAN
We are aware of the ongoing situation regarding Covid-19. Given the increase in vaccinations and the decrease in cases during the warmer months in 2020, we hope to hold the summer school in person, on EPFL campus. We're looking forward to the direct interaction and the opportunity to meet you all without zoom, but probably with masks, 1.5m distance, and extra space in the auditorium.

Nevertheless, we are planning for both a fully virtual seminar in case in-person meetings won't be possible, and a hybrid form in case individual speakers, for example from other countries, won't be able to attend in person. We will continue to update this page as the event draws closer.
